Leaving Faith Behind

Leaving Faith Behind

Leaving a faith is sometimes complicated, resulting in shunning, emotional and even physical abuse from family and community. In Britain it could be difficult for ex-evangelical Christians, ex-Muslims, and ex ultra-Orthodox Jews.

Ste Richardsson is an ex-Jehovah's Witness. His great-grandfather helped spread the religion in Jamaica in the late 19th century. After leaving it in 2007, Ste was disowned by his family, and was for a time homeless. Today he is vice-chair of Faith to Faithless, and organises regular museum tours and apostate socials. He holds masters degrees in medical translation and secondary education, and is a French and Japanese translator.

Faith to Faithless supports apostates by providing them with peer support and a platform to speak about their experiences, and trains organisations such as the police and social services to better understand the issues they face.

Do you think about what is right and wrong, based on reason and respect for others?

Do you find beauty, and joy in the one life we have, without the need for an afterlife?

Do you look to science instead of religion as the best way to discover and understand the world?

Do you believe people can use empathy and compassion to make the world a better place for everyone?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then why not come along to one of our events and meet a friendly group of humanists, atheists, agnostics, skeptics and free-thinkers. We hold monthly speaker events and/or discussions at the Guildford Institute (in the Assembly Room on the first floor unless otherwise stated) and regular social events - all are welcome! There's no entry charge or membership fee, but we do collect donations to cover the room hire and speaker expenses - a donation of £3 is suggested unless you're a student in which case it's free.
