Monthly Meeting - Artificial Intelligence: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Monthly Meeting - Artificial Intelligence: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The evenings are getting darker and it seems like the long hot summer is over...but Guildford & Woking Humanists has a fascinating subject for this month's meeting. We'll be welcoming Professor Paul Krause from the University of Surrey, who will be speaking to us about artificial intelligence.

Professor Krause is Director of Research in the Department of Computer Science, University of Surrey. He graduated in Pure Mathematics and Experimental Physics at Exeter University in 1977. His talk will focus on the interface between computer systems and human society. He believes that computer systems and AI can help our understanding of many of society’s problems, but that the challenges are considerable.

“I do want to emphasise the positives, but it will always remain a matter of our own choice whether we make this a positive opportunity or a negative one.”

Whether you're happy chatting with Siri, Google or Alexa, are concerned about how big data and AI might be influencing your decisions, or you fear the rise of our machine overlords, this meeting is for you. We hope to see you there!

Guildford & Woking Humanists

Do you think about what is right and wrong, based on reason and respect for others?

Do you find beauty, and joy in the one life we have, without the need for an afterlife?

Do you look to science instead of religion as the best way to discover and understand the world?

Do you believe people can use empathy and compassion to make the world a better place for everyone?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then why not come along to one of our events and meet a friendly group of humanists, atheists, agnostics, skeptics and free-thinkers. We hold monthly speaker events and/or discussions at the Guildford Institute (in the Assembly Room on the first floor unless otherwise stated) and regular social events - all are welcome! There's no entry charge or membership fee, but we do collect donations to cover the room hire and speaker expenses - a donation of £3 is suggested unless you're a student in which case it's free.
